Risk Factors: Met S

Risk factors of Metabolic Syndrome:

Stress

The modern lifestyle has created lot of anxiety and stress at the workplace and families. Research indicates that prolonged stress can be an underlying cause of metabolic syndrome by upsetting the hormonal balance.

Overweight and Obesity

Metabolic syndrome’s prevalence is driven by the strong relationship between waist circumference and increasing body fat. However, despite the importance of obesity, even patients whoare of normal weight may also have metabolic syndrome.

Sedentary lifestyle

Lack of physical activity may lead to several factors – increase in body fat especially around mid section, reduced HDL cholesterol; and increase in triglycerides, blood pressure, and glucose.
As reported in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, compared with individuals who watched television or videos or used their computer for less than one hour daily, those that carried out these behaviors for greater than four hours daily have a twofold increased risk of the metabolic syndrome.

Aging

Harrisons also estimated that the metabolic syndrome affects 44% of the U.S. population older than age 50. A greater percentage of women older than age 50 have the syndrome than men. The age dependency of the syndrome’s prevalence is seen in most populations around the world.

Diabetes Mellitus

It is estimated that the large majority (~75%) of patients with type 2 diabetes have metabolic syndrome. Diabetic patients having Metabolic syndrome have higher risks of getting cardiovascular diseases.

Coronary Heart Disease

The approximate prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) is 50%, with a prevalence of 37% in patients with premature coronary artery disease ( age 45), particularly in women. With appropriate cardiac rehabilitation and changes in lifestyle (e.g., balanced diet, physical activity, weight reduction, and, in some cases, medicines), the prevalence of the syndrome can be reduced.
